Bloemfontein: Kaizer Chiefs won their sixth Sparta Macufe Cup at Free State Stadium yesterday; 08 October 2017, to equal the number of Bloemfontein Celtic wins of the tournament.

The game started in frantic pace with both teams showing attacking intents. It was no surprise that the packed stadium did not wait long to witness the first goal of the match. On the fourth minute, Dumisani Zuma found himself unmarked at Celtic’s defensive box and looped the ball beyond the reach of goalkeeper Mtshali, for Chiefs’ first goal.

The lead did not last long as the cross from Atusaye Nyondo from the left, found Victor Letsoalo unmarked on the right and he slotted the equaliser for Celtic.

In the 16th minute, Katsande from a dangerous tackle, received a yellow card for bringing down Nyondo after the centre line. A well-played free kick between Phalane and Maruping, a cross found Victor Letsoalo inside Chiefs’ 18 yards area for his second goal of the match as Celtic took the lead.

The Celtics lead also did not last long and in the 20th minute, Chiefs equalised from the corner kick through a towering and powerful header by Ngezan to equalise for Chiefs.

Chiefs had their penalty appeal turned down by the referee after Jayiya was brought down in the box in the 30 minute. Just before half time, Chiefs had to make an early injury forced substitution after Moleko from the challenge of Celtic’s Abondo. Malepe came in as his substitute.

Chiefs regained the lead from a free kick delivered by Maluleke and Bernard Parker scored.

The second half started with Celtic showing intent and attacked the Chiefs’ goals. It was during this relentless Celtic attacks that they had a corner kick. From a short corner taken, Jembula, narrowly went over the post of Khuzwayo.

In the 65th minute, Khuzwayo’s well-directed pass, found Thwala on the right, he moved the ball to across to second half substitute, Maloangoane. His cross from the left, met Moon who scored, but the referee had already blown his whistle for off side and the goal did not stand. In the dying 85 minute of the game a well taken free kick was taken by Celtic but the ball hit inside of the crossbar, with Chiefs’ keeper well beaten.

The last piece of attacking action came just before the 90th minute when Malongoane earner Chiefs a penalty after a beautiful run and was brought down in the penalty area. Moon scored from the spot kick, after beating Celtic keeper Mtshali on his left hand side, to make the score 4 – 2 to Chiefs.

Deep into injury time, a small crowd of fans tried to invade the pitch, but the SAPS members were quick to react to calm the fans down.
