BLOEMFONTEIN: On Thursday, 07 December 2017, after the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Khehla Sitole had appointed Lt Gen Lebeoana Tsumane as the new Deputy National Commissioner, Crime Detection as on Friday, 01 December 2017, the post of the Provincial Commissioner in the Free State became vacant.
In the interest of progressive service delivery, the National Commissioner appointed with immediate effect, Maj Gen Tholie Afonso as the Acting Provincial Commissioner for Free State Province.
With her in this post, Maj General Afonso brings a wealth of experience, as she started as a young student constable in the South African Police Service College at Hammanskraal in 1990. After completion of her training she was placed at Hennenman Police Station to serve her own people as she was born and bred in the same town. This is where she passionately fell in love with serving people with open heart. She was then transferred to Virginia where she continued to serve her people behind the counter of Community Service Centre, and later was placed in the Detective Service environment in 1992.
She was amongst the first group to establish Meloding Detective Branch in 1996 and when she was promoted to a rank of Captain in 2000, she was then tasked to head Ventersburg Detective Service. It was not long when in 2004 she was appointed as the Provincial Commander of General Investigations, and this opened doors for her to go and enrich her knowledge when she attended Sexual Offences Investigators course offered by United States and Crime Scene Management presented by French Police.
In 2010, she was appointed as the Station Commander of Welkom at the level of Brigadier, and later she was back in the Detectives environment as the Provincial Head Detective Service. In 2011 she was appointed at the level of Maj General and she became Deputy Provincial Commissioner, Crime Detection. In 2016 she became Deputy Provincial Commissioner, Management Intervention. This is the post which she held until her appointment as Acting Provincial Commissioner.
Maj Gen Afonso attained Baccalaures Technologiae in Policing, National Diploma in Policing, Diploma in Criminal Justice and Forensic Auditing, Certificate in Strategic Management and Programme in Total Quality Management.
On Monday, 04 December 2017, the Deputy National Commissioner, Human Resource Management, Lt Gen Bonang Mgwenya came to the Provincial Head Office to introduce the new Acting Provincial Commissioner to the Provincial management on behalf of the National Commissioner, and inform them officially about the appointment of Lt Gen Tsumane as the new Deputy National Commissioner, Crime Detection.
