Bloemfontein: Today marked an important development in the advancement of the Free State as a province on the move towards creating a smart and digital province.

In a effort to respond to the demands of the ever evolving world and the advent of 4th Industrial revolution, the Free State Provincial Government(FSPG) has entered into a Public Express WiFi partnership with Cell-C. The agreement will see a massive rollout of various public coonectivity spots across all the province’s municipalities.

The Free State Express Wifi service will include the rollout of free Internet open for individuals to connect to the Internet or communicate wirelessly.

This will allow learners and university students to gain access to academic and economic opportunities. It will put further pressure to mobile operators to bring down the costs of data; and aims to create opportunities for the informal sector to modernize their businesses and start transacting over cashless platforms.

“Our intention is to make sure that we have presence in all municipalities, especially smaller towns that are not able to attract investment from corporate companies. We will also work closely with existing partnerships through the Department of Telecommunication and Postal Services (DTPS) and private companies to ensure we do not duplicate efforts and waste opportunities.” said Premier Ntombela.

In the first phase of the project, the partnership will target locations with high population density.

  • This partnership will see the creation of training and job opportunities for more than 20 000 Skills Transfer Hours and will also be shared with youth across the province. These skills include; but are not limited to:
  • Technical Wi-Fi deployment;
  • End User Interface Training;
  • Marketing Insights Opportunity Identification;
  • Post Deployment Impact Studies;
  • Data Analytics and Segmentation; and
  • Brand and Campaign Execution

“The 4th Industrial Revolution challenges us to think wide about creating an environment that is conducive to creating new forms of jobs, especially for young people. I am happy to announce that the Free State Provincial Government has entered into a mtually beneficial agreement with Cell C that will see large scale of free public access wifi across all our Free State Municipalities.” concluded the Premier.
