Bloemfontein: The Provincial Commissioner of the Free State, Lieutenant General Lebeoana strongly condemns the recent acts of mob justice in the Free State. “We cannot condoned people turning our Province into a lawlessness society by imposing ‘People Justice’ instead of allowing the law to take its course and deal with alleged criminals. Such people will themselves be faced with the might of the law”, Lt Gen Tsumane said.
This follows another incident of mob justice at Phokeng village; in Thabong; on Thursday 23 November, where the community assaulted and stoned a 31 year old man to death after the man allegedly stabbed his girlfriend, multiple times. It is alleged that the deceased and the girlfriend were engaged in a quarrel that led to the stabbing. The girlfriend was referred to Bongani Hospital for treatment. A case of murder has been registered for further investigation.
In another incident in Harrismith, nine (9) suspects have since appeared in the Magistrate court on the charges of kidnapping, attempted murder, arson, and public violence following an attempt by the mob to torch a local sangoma alive, on Saturday 18 November 2017. The 56 year old woman was apprehended by the community after she was suspected of being responsible for the murder of a 7 year old girl who was found murdered after being reported missing.
The woman was rescued by the police and as a result thereof, two police vehicles were torched. The post-mortem has since confirmed that the little girl was raped and had a stab wound to the head. The suspects have been remanded in custody and will appear again on the 27 November, for formal bail application.
“I have appointed a team of expert investigators to lead the investigation into the murder of this little girl and they are following all leads to ensure that those responsible for her death are brought to book” Lt Gen Tsumane concluded.
