Sasolburg: A 25-year-old accused; Tota Mokoena, appeared in Sasolburg High court on the 21 January 2020. He was sentenced to a life imprisonment and 30 years extra for rape.

It was discovered during trial that on the 22 November 2017, Tota and his accomplice raped a 19 year old victim who was then 16 years. The victim was walking with her friend and her friend’s mother from church.

They were approached by two unknown African males, who pointed them with a knife before instructing the three ladies to lie down on the ground.

The 16-year-old victim managed to run away and the two suspects pursued her until they caught and raped her. The victim and the two witnesses did not know the suspects. The second incident took place on the 15 June 2018, in the evening.

The court heard that the 21-year-old victim was with her uncle near extension 17 Walter Sisulu when they were approached by two unknown males. The two started to threaten the victims with a knife and assaulted the uncle and continued to rape the victim.

The suspect was unknown to the victim. On the third incident which happened on the 01 July 2018. The victim who was then 15-years-old, was walking home from a local park.

When she was near the railway station, she was approached by an unknown male who pointed her with a knife and assaulted her before raping her. Also in this incident, the suspect was unknown.

The three victims did not know the suspect and this three cases were later closed in court. The investigating officer, Detective sergeant Sophie Kgayane continued with her investigation and linked Tota through DNA.

Kgayane left no stone unturned during her investigation. She managed to send Tota in prison where he will never violate women and children again.
