Welkom: A teenage girl was hiking from Welkom to a farm in the district of Wesselsbron, when a vehicle with three African men occupants offered her a lift. On the way, she was gang raped and robbed off cash. Suspects are still on the loose and manhunt has been launched.
On the 27 July 2017; at about 19:30, a 23 year old woman was hiking in State Way road; Welkom; next to the petrol filling station, when a vehicle unknown to her stopped next to her, with three African men inside. They offered her a lift to a farm in the district of Wesselsbron, as they claimed to be travelling to Bloemhof.
When they passed Tshepong mine, one of the three suspects, demanded cash and took her purse with R110-00 cash inside. Another occupant told the driver to stop the vehicle and he called her to come out and instructed her to undress. She was raped by three occupants of this vehicle.
After, the rape ordeal her bag was thrown from the vehicle to the ground and they drove off. She managed to report the incident at Odendaalsrus Police Station and a case of rape was registered for further investigation. The suspects are still at large.
Hikers are sternly warned not to hike at night, know the registration number, colour, model of the car. If it’s already late go back and sleep over and hike in day light. Ask your relative to come with you to the hiking spot to take all these information of the vehicle you travelled with. Hiking is dangerous nowadays so let us be careful.
