Allanridge: Three foreign nationals, aged between 26 to 42 years old, appeared in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate court yesterday; 04 March 2020, on a charge of murder, possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.

This follows the murder of Thapelo Phushuli (29) who was fatally shot at a tavern during the weekend. A case of murder was registered and on the 2 March 2020, Detective Sergeant Stephen Mokati received information regarding the whereabouts of the suspects.

He requested reinforcement from Crime Prevention, Welkom K9 Unit, Odendaalsrus SAPS members and Protea Security who assisted with a drone.

Two suspects were spotted at a hiking spot and when they saw the police, they ran towards Laclucha farm next to Nyakallong Township where they were arrested. Two firearms, two magazines and one live round were found in their possession and seized.

Preliminary investigation led to the arrest of the third suspect. The firearms will be referred to forensic laboratory for ballistic tests to determine if they were used in the commission of crime.

Members of the public are again reminded about the firearm amnesty period ending on the 1st May 2020. They can hand over any firearm or parts thereof to the nearest police station.
