Bloemfontein: Members of the notorious Maroma gang were on Thursday, 19 September 2019, sentenced by the High Court in Bloemfontein. Nine accused, Peter Ramolahlehi (29), Pule Eksteen (28), Bongani Mandla (29), Labengula Bahukudi (28), Itumeleng Manyingisa (37), Senti Mohloane (31), Jack Booysen (28), Mongezi Moeketsi (24) and Itumeleng Taylor (24) were sentenced to life imprisonment for Murder, three (3) years for contravention of POCA act and another three (3) for defeating the ends of justice.

The other three accused, Themba Sefali (19), Lebohang Molele (17) and Thapelo Moeketsi (19), were sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for murder plus 3 for contravention of POCA act and another three (3) for defeating the ends of justice.

The incident happened on the 5 August 2019 where the deceased; Mpho Phuroe (25), was sitting with his wife at their house in Sejake Square. The three accused who were known to the deceased asked him to accompany them to go for a smoke.

On arrival at the shack, he was accosted by a group of Maroma gang members, including those who fetched him. They stabbed him with sharp objects then wrapped his body with a blanket and burnt him at an open space near factories.

Police were alerted by a passerby who saw smoke near the factories. The case was handed over to Provincial Organised Crime Unit who worked hard to ensure a successful conviction. The family of the deceased was in court during the sentence and expressed their appreciation to police and NPA.
