Welkom:  The video that went viral on social media, showed two men approached the sedan that parked at Commando Supermarket Centre and fired several shots while the late Mr Shai Mikia Mohapi was still inside his vehicle.

He was certified dead at the scene and his vehicle was also robbed. After a thorough investigation, two suspects were arrested and was sentenced to thirty and seventeen years in jail respectively.

On the 10 November 2018, Mr Shai Mikia Mohapi [54] was driving blue Volkswagen Polo with Gauteng Province registration, was with his wife who went inside Commando Supermarket while he stayed inside the vehicle.

He was approached by two African men who was seen on the video, when one drew a firearm and fired three shots on his chest and left arm. He was pulled from his vehicle and suspects drove off with his vehicle. Police and Medical personnel were called and he was certified dead at the scene.

A case of murder and hi-jacking was registered for further investigation by Detective Warrant Officer Dylan Saayman of Welkom Detective Services as well as Welkom Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit. The vehicle was found abandoned in the vicinity of President Steyn mine in Welkom.

A team under the leadership of Lt Col. Letseleha the Commander of Welkom Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit managed to effect the arrests.

Mr Lae Matale [ 24] who is a Lesotho citizen and Mr Lebohang Morapeli [30] was found guilty as charged for murder and robbery by Welkom Regional Court. Mr Matale was sentenced to 30 years in jail for murder, robbery and Illegal possession of firearm while his accomplice was sentenced to 17 years in jail.

“I would like to applaud the investigation team led by Lt Col. Letseleha and his team which led to the arrests of these accused who brutally murdered Mr Mohapi. This conviction wiil also sent a clear cut message to criminals out there that crime does not pay. Welkom residents appreciated for turning to be a reporting nation.” said the Cluster Commander of Welkom, Major General Lerato Molale.
