Welkom: The fake lawyer; Teboho Mohlolo (38), was found guilty of Theft at the Welkom Magistrates Court on the 25 October 2019 and was handed a 4 year suspended sentence and ordered to pay back R55 000.00 he stole from the complainant.
On the 27 July 2018, cash; that amounted to R55 000 was handed over to a 38 year old man who pretended to be a lawyer, after it was withdrawn from Welkom ABSA main branch. Apparently, a 49 year old mine worker who is a Lesotho national, was dismissed from Freddies shaft number 5 mine in Welkom.
He sought legal assistance at an office that was occupied by a Paralegal officer who used to help mine workers with their work related cases. It seemed the person passed on and Mr Tota Kgalala met with the suspect who related that he will assist him as a lawyer.
The alleged fraudster opened a file that is mostly opened by lawyers when assisting their clients.
It took almost a year and the case could not reach the court. The victim got suspicious and registered a case of fraud for further investigation.
The alleged fraudster kept on phoning Mr Kgalala until on the 26 March 2019, where he was arrested next to Odendaalsrus Public Library by the investigator of the case; Warrant Officer Sello Khama of Welkom Detective Economics Crimes Unit.
In his possession, the file of Mr Tota Francis Kgalala was found and seized.
