Botshabelo: Police have apprehended 11 suspects last night after they allegedly broke into a shop in Botshabelo and helped themselves with groceries.

On the 30 January 2019, police were summoned to Section F, Botshabelo, after community members allegedly broke into a shop and allegedly took groceries. These community members were targeting a shop believed to belong to the foreign men apprehended for allegedly raping a 20-year-old female.

Community members allegedly started throwing stones at the police upon their arrival and Public Order Police were called for back-up. Two male police officials sustained injuries during an attack. The situation was brought under control and 11 suspects aged between 18 and 40 years arrested.

Some of the groceries were recovered. The apprehended suspects will be appearing before Botshabelo Magistrates’ Court soon facing charges of business burglary, possession of suspected stolen property and assault on police officers.

Free State Police Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Moeketsi Sempe condemned acts of community members taking law into their own hands by allegedly breaking into the suspects’ shop.

“Police are there to serve and protect the community and an attack on police officers whilst performing their duties will not be tolerated.” said Lt Gen Sempe.
