Welkom: Police stations in the policing precincts around Lejweleputswa, have shown a sharp rise in the arrests of community members not complying with the Alert Level 3 and 4 COVID-19 Regulations in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19.

In a period of two weeks; starting from 21 June 2021 to 05 July 2021, about 381 persons were arrested. A large chunk out of this 381 people, was the 103 people who were brought to book for failure to be confined to a place of residence during Level 3.

There is already about 89 people arrested for the same offence under Level 04. They were found loitering in public disregarding the curfew legal requirements. Others transgressed regulations such as failure to wear a mask in public place, sale or distribution of liquor, transportation of liquor, failure to close establishment during closing times, to mention a few.

The station with a sizeable number of these transgressors is Odendaalsrus Police Station, followed by Welkom and the numbers decrease at other stations throughout the District.

The management of Lejweleputswa District would like to make an appeal to community members to take heed of the President’s call to fight the spread of COVID–19 by adhering to the Regulations.

“These Regulations are meant to save lives, not to create animosity between the police and community members. However, we will enforce these Regulations harshly on those who do not adhere.” concluded Lejweleputswa District Commissioner Major General Lerato Molale.
