Welkom: The annual O.R Tambo Games were held yesterday; 27 October 2018 at Welkom. The Stateway Road in Welkom, was hype of activity and the road was closed.
The two main floats designed in the images of Mama Albertina Nontsikelelo Sisulu and Former President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, accompanied by bikers, Brazilian, Basotho, Zulu and Xhosa dancers, walked through Stateway road and leaving the crowds amazed with their performances.
The O.R. Tambo Games have now been staged for a solid eighteen (18) years giving testimony to the sustainability of this programme. This programme is one of a number of sport activations that the department prides itself of.
Named after the stalwart of South Africa’s liberation struggle, Mr. Oliver Reginald Tambo, this year the games take place against the backdrop of the celebration of the centenaries of Mr. Tambo’s fellow freedom fighters: Mama Albertina Nontsikelelo Sisulu and Former President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
Premier of the Free State, Me Sefora “Sisi” Ntombela, Free State MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Me Mathabo Leeto, Executive Mayor of Matjhabeng; Cllr Nkosinjani Speelman and other dignitaries, led the carnival celebrations.
The 2018 O.R. Tambo Games also consisted of six (6) sporting codes: volleyball, basketball, softball, netball, disability football and athletics which were staged at the Goldfields TVET College (Tosa Campus) and at the Thabong Indoor Sport.
