In an emotionally charged occasion, Premier Sisi Ntombela accompanied by Members of the Executive Council, welcomed home 44 students, who are bursary holders, studying in Wuhan, China; the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak.

His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to repatriate all willing South Africans from China was done after careful consultation with the ministry of International relations, chinese government and all the relevant stakeholders. A decision welcomed by many, particularly the parents and families of those who were in China.

The Free State Provincial Government, working closely with the national government and other stakeholders, worked tirelessly to ensure the safe return of our citizens back to the country.

Addresing the students and members of the media present, the Premier said;

“I am pleased that after what felt like a lifetime, they are back on our shores, happy and healthy. We thank all who made their safe return home possible. These kids, having been at the epicenter of this virus, have been through a lot. However, they remain strong and are quite knowledgeable about this disease.”

She added that, this will assist us greatly because, using their knowledge, they will spread the message on how to protect themselves from this virus in their respective areas, which ultimately, will help curb the spread of the virus. I am very happy that our children are finally back.
