Welkom: Mr Thato Letsoara  appeared in the Welkom Magistrate Court on the 12 May 2020 and was released on warning. He is to appear again on the 25 June 2020.
On the 08 May 2020, a 25 year old woman was walking with her sister in Rheederspark; Welkom, when they met with the suspect who promised them employment at a mine. He took the personal details of the complainant and requested R300.
He was given cash on the spot. The suspect phoned later and demanded additional cash that amounted to R1 000 which was deposited through cellphone banking. After cash was deposited during the night, she received an SMS that she must report at President Steyn 2 mine the following day on the 9 May 2020.
The complainant went to TEBA and to her shock, there was no such record of her particulars regarding employment. Then she realized that she was defrauded and she reported the incident to the Police. A case of fraud was registered.
The case was investigated by Welkom Detective Services [Economic Crimes Unit] and the suspect was arrested.
The community is advised to refrain from trusting people in the streets, rather contact the relevant company or organization to confirm if they are hiring.
