Ficksburg: A 26 years old farmer manager was airlifted to a hospital in Bethlehem after he was shot in the forehead by unknown suspects on the 2nd November 2017.
The police were called to Mooiplaas farm on the 02 November 2017; at about 17:30, on the allegations that a farm manager and a farm worker were attacked at Mooiplaas farm, near Ficksburg.
On arrival, it was discovered that Mr Aarend Covert, 26 years old was shot in the head and had to be airlifted to Bethlehem Medi-Clinic hospital in a serious condition, whereas the farm worker Lenyara Tsotetsi had defensive stab wounds in the arms.
The two were allegedly confronted by five unknown males when entering the main house on their way back from a neighbouring farm. The suspects allegedly instructed them not to get out of the vehicle but the victim resisted and confronted them. A scuffle ensued and he was allegedly shot in the forehead, the farm worker was stabbed while trying to defend himself, from the knife wielding suspects. He managed to escape and ran away.
Suspects realising that he will raise an alarm, fled in different directions to the mountains. A revolver allegedly fell as they were fleeing the scene. Two badly injured suspects were handed over to the police by farmers and were arrested. They were referred to Dihlabeng hospital in Bethlehem where one of them later died. The other one is still under police guard.
The police and the farmers are still on the lookout for the remaining three suspects and a case of attempted murder has been registered for further investigation.
Another case of murder will be registered following the death of the alleged suspect.
- Meanwhile, a female employee in Daspoort farm has been taken in for questioning after preliminary investigations detected that she was the last person to be seen with the deceased, Mr Baars Baard. Investigation continues.
