Welkom: Five armed robbery suspects nabbed at the road between Odendaalsrus and Kroonstad after they robbed two employees of their companys goods.

Yesterday morning, at 07:00, a 52 year old man who is a Driver of one of the companies in industrial area in Welkom, was driving a Toyota Quantum together with a 59 year old colleague when they were stopped by an African male person who was wearing blue overall next to the road between Odendaalsrus and Kroonstad.

The driver stopped and the man asked for a drivers license, then climbed into the vehicle with a firearm in his hand and another man opened the passenger door and entered. The driver then pressed the panic button.

Firearm was found in the possession of the suspects.

The suspects told the driver to continue driving and about 500m away, the driver was followed by a white Ford ranger with unknown registration and the duo instructed the driver to stop the vehicle.

Then the suspects placed them at the back of the vehicle, tied them with shoe laces and suspects opened the side door and started to off-load boxes of cigarettes and sweets to the value of R500 000.00, on to the Ford Ranger bakkie. No one was injured during the incident.

Members of Welkom K9 unit and Welkom Flying Squad members received information and managed to arrest five suspects at the same road and recovered stolen goods and Z88 firearm with no serial number.

All five suspects aged 30 to 37 years are from Thabong Township will soon appear at the Welkom Magistrates court facing a charge of Armed robbery.

“I would like to appreciate all members involved in the arrests and seizures of cigarettes and firearm for a job well done. This will send a clear cut message to would be robbers that crime does not pay.” said the Acting Cluster Commander of Welkom, Brigadier Mzondi Mojafi.
