Bloemfontein: The Free State MEC for Health; Montseng Tsiu, has welcomed 17 Cuban Health Professionals to the Free State as part of building the capacity of South Africa to fight against Covid-19.
These health cadres from Cuba, are allocated according to the five Districts of the Free State. They are here to be integrated into the health teams in the Districts as their speciality is mainly oriented Primary Health Care for a preventative health care service.
They are possessing skills in the following health categories:
- Family Physician;
- Information Management (Biostatistics);
- Epidemiology Technologist; and
- Health Technology
“This deployment of Cuban Health Professionals is highly beneficial to South Africa as it is targeted at strengthening the health system. It further cements the strong ties that already exist between these two countries, with the Free State already having the largest contingent of its medical students having studied in Cuba.” said Tsiu.
The Ministry of Health has done everything according to prescripts in order to protect both the Cuban Health Professionals as well as the South Africans.
“Our fellow Cuban Health Professionals were quarantined for 14 days in Pretoria since their landing in South Africa. They are now in the Free State where the Provincial Department of Health is facilitating their registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), as well as Inducting them before they can practice medicine in the country.” said Tsiu.
