Odendaalsrus: The South African Police Service wishes to warn the public about criminals that target unsuspecting hitchhikers and sometimes motorists especially during this time when people are eargely returning to their homes for festive season.

This follows an incident where on Sunday; 06 December 2020, a 26 years old woman was at a hiking spot in Odendaalsrus along side an unknown male who was also looking for a lift. She was allegedly given a lift by the driver of a green bluish BMW with two other occupants.

Along the way, one of the passengers jumped out of the car whilst in motion because the driver kept making U-turns saying he is looking for someone. The other passenger then chased after him.

According to information received, the driver jumped to the back seat of the car and allegedly raped the young woman. The other passenger who was giving chase came back and allegedly raped her as well.

The two suspects then took off with her cellphone and R200.00, before leaving her stranded. The victim managed to get assistance from a passersby.

A case of rape and common robbery was opened at Odendaalsrus SAPS for further investigation. The Welkom SAPS FCS appeal to anyone with information to contact Detective Captain Bizzah Ntsiane at 082 466 6762

The community is urged to take heed of the following dangers of hitchhiking:

– Criminals may take advantage of your vulnerability to crime;
– People are also in danger of hit and run accidents especially on public roads;
-The driver and other passengers are not known to the hitchhiker(s);
– The hitchhiker may be left stranded at an unfamiliar place and at unspecified time;
– Motorists can be killed and robbed their belongings;
– Hikers must use the taxis rather than short cuts of hiking; and
– Hikers must avoid this as they might fall in the trap of rapists and robbers.
