Virginia: Alleged Makaota gang members; 5 in number, who murdered a man and attacked the police station in October 2019, were each sentenced to serve their entire life in jail.

Judge Mgudlwa passed the life sentences while Mr. Lekgetho prosecuted the matter at Virginia Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 12 November 2018.

Prior to their sentences, the court heard how the 5 accused males, Tankiso Malgas, Sabata Sentwedi, Tumelo Mahase, Ndabeni Maqhosa, and Molahlehi Patrick Mosioa, were involved in the fight with alleged members of a Portuguese gang in Meloding which ultimately led to the death of Pumlani “Pensele” who succumbed to stab wounds.

Other Portuguese gang members allegedly ran to Meloding SAPS station for refuge but these Makaota gang members chased them and attacked the police station with stones and other weapons which left the station vandalised.

These incidents occurred on Sunday, 21 October 2018. The two cases, murder and malicious damage to property were opened for investigation. The case was assigned to the team leader Sgt Morena Machalotsa who led a Free State Provincial Serious and Violent Task Team under the command of Brig Tshokolo Posholi.

Their diligent investigation secured the successful conviction and sentencing of these 5 suspects.

Thabong Cluster Commander Maj Gen Apaphia Modise commended the members for ensuring that criminal gangsters get a heavy sentence that will send a strong message that criminal gangsterism will never be tolerated in our communities.

“I would also like to thank Free State Provincial Office for the support and cooperation displayed between them and our Cluster office. We also thank National Prosecuting Authority and department of justice for helping us to deter criminals from criminal activities with such hefty sentence.” concluded Maj Gen Modise.
