Bethlehem: A 50-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape by Bethlehem Magistrate on Friday 28 February 2020.
The sentencing came after the accused was arrested last year in February and after he was accused of raping his teenage step daughter. The victim was fourteen years at the time.
Investigation revealed that the accused used to rape the victim while her mother was away and gave the victim money to shut her up. Victim’s mother became aware of the rape ordeal when her child missed her periods.
She took her to the clinic where pregnancy was confirmed. It was later discovered that accused has been raping the child since October 2018. Investigating officer Sergeant Moneuoa Mosia of Bethlehem Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) says this was one of the not so easy cases to investigate as families normally try to hide incidents of this nature, however he had to put more efforts for the sake of the child and her mother to get justice.
