Welkom: The community of Matjhabeng, led by Matjhabeng Community Foundation, marched to the Municipality offices today; 31 March 2021, to deliver the memorandum of demands.
They are calling for the resignation of Executive Mayor of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality; Nkosinjani Speelman. Speelman is accused of not providing sufficient levels of service delivery, such as regular water cuts; sewerage blockages, refuse removal and jobs as well as tenders for pals.
Protesters gathered the Thabong Community Center from 11:00, before marching to the Matjhabeng Municipality offices in Welkom’s central business district (CBD) at 14:00.
There were visible law enforcement from the South African Police Services(SAPS) and Traffic Department. The speaker of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality; Bheki Stofile, accepted the memorandum on behalf of the Municipality. In accepting the memorandum, Stofile said the matters raised in the memorandum, will be discussed in the Council’s sitting today.
The protesters have given the Municipality 14 days to respond to their demands, failing which, they will embark on total shutdown if their demands are not met.
On the other hand, protesters holding placards saying “Hands off our Mayor”, “Political battles are not service delivery issues” and others, made their voices heard as they vowed to continue their support for Speelman and are against his removal.
Efforts have been made to get an official statement from the Municipality as well as Mayor. FS News Online will continue to request the Executive Mayor, Nkonsinjani Speelman’s response and publish it accordingly once received.
