Welkom: South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) members in Matjhabeng; Welkom, went on strike action and marched to the offices of Matjhabeng Local Municipality at Welkom, on Wednesday; 14 November 2018.
The municipal workers are not satisfied with alleged deductions that the municipality makes from employee wages; like medical aids, insurances and pension funds, that are not paid over to their intended recipients.
Workers are also not happy about overtime payments that are not paid. They also allege that the Municipality is planning to host a annual Christmas candle light event that will cost R400 000.00 but the Municipalility is not able to meet their salary expectations.
Angry municipal workers threw buckets of sewage onto four levels of the municipal building in Welkom. Refuse was also thrown all over the place and set alight in Stateway street,close to municipal building.
The police were called to the scene to calm the situation and keep close eye on proceedings. .
No comments were received from Municipality and SAMWU officials, by the time of publishing the story.
