Welkom: The Executive Mayor of Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Nkosinjani Speelman, has found himself in hot water for allegedly using xenophobic and racist remarks.
This comes after a video went viral on social media platforms. In the video, Speelman could be heard saying derogatory and xenophobic remarks when welcoming SANDF members, deployed during the Lockdown, in the Northern Free State areas.
The Mayor could also be heard telling the soldiers to use “force” on those with unruly behaviour. This was in reference to the Bronville community members, a largely coloured community, in the Welkom area. This angered the Bronville community who have since asked for the removal of the Mayor.
The Mayor has since issued two apologies but this has not saved him from the suspension of the ANC in the Free State.
The South African Human Rights Commission has also opened its own investigation.
Efforts to reach the Mayor’s office were not successful.
