Welkom: Last night; 10 March 2022, Free State’s MEC of Police, Roads and Transport, Willam Bulwane and Matjhabeng Local Municipality Mayor; Councillor Thanduxolo Khalipha, met with the Lejweleputswa Taxi Association to discuss challenges that are facing the taxi operators in the Lejwelputswa district.

The conflict was sparked due to illegal taxi operators who are not in possession of permits. Some of the operators or owners are alleged to be teachers, traffic officers, municipal and government officials. According to the law, these officials are not supposed to operate taxis.

The Executive Mayor emphasized that taxi industry stability in the municipality is important and it guarantees public transport users to arrive in time to their different destinations.

The MEC and the executive mayor committed to meet with executive and taxi operators during the first week of April 2022, to find long term solutions in Lejwelputswa district.

The MEC further emphasized that all taxi operators and associations must comply with the law. Those who do not comply will face the consequences of operating outside law duristrictions.

The meeting agreed to find amicable solutions to resolve the challenges that are confronting the taxi industry in Matjhabeng Local Municipality.
