Sasolburg: Free State MEC for Police, Roads and Transport; Mr. Sam Mashinini, conveyed his condolences to the families of the nine people who lost their lives in a head-on collision between a taxi and truck on the morning of the 17 February 2021, in Zamdela; Sasolburg.
It is alleged that the taxi-driver was ferrying commuters from Zamdela when he collided head-on with a truck. Eight passengers in the taxi died on the scene and a pedestrian waiting to cross the road was also hit by the vehicles during the accident.
The pedestrian also perished on the scene. The taxi driver and two passengers sustained serious injuries and were taken in critical condition to the Fezi Ngobe Ntombi hospital in Sasolburg.
For the time being, the R82 road between Vereeniging and Koppies was closed for traffic and law enforcers on the scene advised motorists to drive through Zamdela back to the R82 after the horrific crash.
“I want to reiterate my call on all road users to drive with caution and care and heed the rules of the road. Those using public transport, please be advised that you do not need to utilise a service in which you do not feel safe. It is your right to insist that you are transported in a safe and respectful way.” said MEC Mashinini.
