Bloemfontein: In the early morning of the 31 December 2019, a suspect in the business robbery that happened at a Cash Store; in Ikgomotseng location; near Soutpan, was shot dead during a crossfire between the police and the robbers.

On Monday the 30 December 2019, four males arrived at the store and found the 36 year old owner; who is of foreign national, inside the shop. The shop owner alleged that, the four suspects pointed him with firearms and robbed him of undisclosed amount of money, airtime and cigarettes.

The police were alerted of the incident and the search for the suspects ensued. Bloemfontein Flying Squad and Bayswater Visible Policing were activated. A suspicious Toyota Tazz was spotted near one of the taverns with only the driver inside.

The police approached the driver for questioning and discovered that he was part of the sought after suspects. He was then used to lure other suspects out of their hiding.

The other suspects arrived and when noticing that the police were presents, they fired at the police and the police returned fire. One suspect estimated to be in his early thirties was fatally shot and died on the scene.

The police arrested two suspects, one ran away. Two firearms; an ORJS Tauris revolver loaded with five rounds and a Baby Brown, were seized on the scene by the police.

The two suspects aged 19 and 25 years; from Welkom, will appear in Brandfort Magistrate Court on robbery, attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms.

Subsequently, a murder case is being investigated by Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
