Virginia: Joint efforts by Virginia SAPS; Fidelity Special Operations and Transnet; enabled them to bring to book four suspected copper cable thieves in Virginia on Monday; 10 May 2021.

The four suspects were arrested after an operation was conducted by Fidelity Security. They were found busy cutting cables and loading it onto the bakkie they were using to carry it at Kalkvlakte railway station.

Virginia SAPS members were mobilised to the scene for assistance and the four suspects were arrested. Cables and a motor vehicle, a blue Ford Ranger bakkie, were confiscated by the police.

On closer preliminary investigation at the scene, it was discovered that this copper cable was cut from a number of poles, causing substantial damage to the infrastructure. A total of 536 metres of copper cable were recovered from the bakkie.

Residences of the four suspects and ownership of the bakkie is yet to be determined. The four suspects aged between 20 and 40, will be charged for damage caused to Infrastructure and theft of copper cable.

They will appear at the Virginia Magistrate’s Court soon.
