Fouriesburg: Lerato Elvias Moswetsi; aged 29, appeared in the Bethlehem High court for sentencing on Thursday; 26 June 2020. He was arrested on 18 September 2019 and was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, 5 years for each 3 counts of house breaking and another 5 years for attempted murder. All sentences will run concurrently.

It was discovered during trial that the victim (59 years old) arrived home from town on the 12 September 2019. She then went to take a bath and while in the bath, she was confronted by Moswetsi who attacked and assaulted her until she was unconscious before raping her.

Investigations led to the arrest of Moswetsi on the 18 September 2019 after the victim recognized him on photo Identity parade. During trial, it was testified that Moswetsi started by stalking the victim from 16 August 2019 after he broke into her house and stole some items including bottles of body wash.

During his arrest, Moswetsi was found in possession of the same bottle of body wash that he stole from the victim. The case was investigated by Investigating Officer Rene Nel who said cases of this nature always gives her sleepless nights, however she always strive to ensure that justice is served for the sake of the victim.

Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane welcomed the sentencing and expressed her gratitude to Warrant Officer Rene Nel for her outstanding and commitment to her work.

“Abuse of women and children is still a very sensitive issue and it cannot be tolerated. We will always make sure that the perpetrators of Gender Based Violence face the full might of law.” concluded Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane.
