Bloemfontein: Bloemfontein Celtic secured a 2-1 win over SuperSport United in a 2020-21 DStv Premiership match at Dr Molemela Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The win took Phunya Sele Sele up to ninth place on the league table, while Matsatsantsa remained joint-second with Swallows FC on the standings following defeat – five points behind leaders and Tshwane rivals, Mamelodi Sundowns.
Although Matsatsantsa saw most of the ball in the opening stages, it was Phunya Sele Sele, who threatened first through Reagan van de Ross, who was making his top-flight debut. The young attacker turned his marker inside the box in the 14th minute and pulled the trigger, but his shot was well saved by Ronwen Williams in the SuperSport goal-posts.
Van De Ross was then guilty of missing a sitter just before the half-hour mark as the Celtic academy product miss-kicked the ball from a one-on-one situation as Williams and SuperSport survived a scare.
Matsatsantsa upped the tempo towards the half-time break and they nearly broke the deadlock after Bradley Grobler controlled a long ball in the Phunya Sele Sele box, before setting up Sipho Mbule. Mbule unleashed a powerful curling shot which was brilliantly parried away by Celtic goalkeeper Sipho Chaine in the 44th minute to ensure that the first-half ended with the two teams locked at 0-0.
It took a minute for Van De Ross to make amends for his first-half miss after the restart with the SuperSport defence exposed and they were duly punished by the promising player.
Van De Ross burst into the opposition box before combining with Victor Letsoalo and finding the back of the net to make it 1-0 to Celtic as he marked his DStv Premiership debut with a well-taken goal.
SuperSport head coach Kaitano Tembo reacted by introducing Thamsanqa Gabuza and the visitors began playing balls into the box with Siyabonga Nhlapo’s cross pushed out by Chaine for a corner-kick.
The resultant corner-kick was cleared to Lucky Mohomi, who was on the edge of the Celtic box and he unleashed a curling shot which beat Chaine hands down to make it 1-1 in the 57th minute.
Williams became a busy man as he finger-tipped Motebang Sera’s effort onto the upright after the Lesotho international had received a defence-splitting pass from Lucky Baloyi moments later.
However, the Bafana Bafana international was beaten in the 80th minute when Tchilimbou set-up Sera, who fired home to make it 2-1 to Celtic albeit calls for offside.
Matsatsantsa then pushed for a late equalizing goal, but Chaine pulled off a fantastic save to deny Mbule in stoppage time and ultimately, Celtic emerged 2-1 winners.
