Botshabelo: The 46 years old, Thabo Alfred Phalole`s reign of terror was brought to a standstill when he was sentenced to life imprisonment by Botshabelo Magistrate court for rape, kidnapping and armed robbery.
The accused who is from section J in Botshabelo began tormenting his victims in 2015 by raping them in the presence of their boyfriends, then rob them. He would prey on his victims as they were sitting comfortably in their cars and attack them when they least expect. The court heard how the accused threatened his victims with a firearm then instructed the boyfriends to drive and park next to a grave yard or an open space.
Three of his victims were raped in Botshabelo graveyard, one an open space next to Rustfontein Dam in Botshabelo and the fifth one in an open space near Serwalo Trust, Thaba Nchu. He would lock boyfriends in the boot whilst raping their girlfriends and thereafter rob the couples of their belongings, tell them where the car keys are and flee the scene. Detective/Sergeant
Lebohang Mohai of Selosesha Family, Child and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) was assigned to investigate the cases and his sharp skills helped him to notice that one person was responsible for all these cases. His break-through came when the suspect was arrested for house breaking and found in possession of a fire-arm which was stolen from one of the victims’ boyfriend. The suspect was thereafter positively linked to all five rape cases.
The acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner, Crime Detection, Brigadier Bonthuys welcomed the sentence and applauded the investigating officer for leaving no stone unturned in making sure justice was served for the victims. He pleaded with the community to be cautious when parked in open spaces especially at night.
