Bethlehem: The case of attempted murder against Tumelo Mokoena (46), was postponed to 11 July 2020 for further investigation and he will stay in custody.

Tumelo appeared before the Magistrate in Bethlehem on Monday; 15 June 2020, for allegedly trying to kill his ex-girlfriend. Mokoena who is also known as “Mosotho Chakela”, was arrested by Bohlokong Detectives on Saturday; 08 June 2020.

It is alleged that on Sunday; 31 May 2020, Mokoena stabbed his 29 year-old ex-girlfriend, Makhothatso Thafeng with a knife on the right arm and stomach. This was after Tumelo met her on the street and demanded that she rekindle their love. When the victim refused, he then took out a knife and stabbed her before fleeing the scene.

Victim was assisted by members of the community and was taken to the hospital where she spent several days. After being discharged from the hospital, Makhothatso went to the police to lay a charge against Mokoena who was traced and subsequently arrested.

Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane said Mokena tried to kill his girlfriend while we have a scourge of violence against women in our country.

She welcomed Mokoena’s arrest and made an appeal to all victims of abuse to report such incidents as soon as they noticed signs as there is no incident small or big that eventually lead to Gender Based Violence.
