Ventersburg: Four accused Thapelo Mapje (39); Freddy Malebi(21); Babuji Ndaba(32) and Mohludi Lempe(28), appeared in the Ventersburg Magistrate’s court yesterday; 04 February 2021, on charges of possession of suspected stolen truck.

This comes after they were arrested by Winburg police on N1; about 6km from Ventersburg to Windburg, on Monday, 02 February 2021.

The complainant, who was on route to Cape Town from Johannesburg with a truck and his crew, were hijacked and robbed at gunpoint after they noticed a double cab following them and overtook them. The vehicle then sped off after passing Vaal Plaza.

They drove on until they noticed the same vehicle 6 km out of Ventersburg towards Winburg, where they were stopped by one of the occupants thereof followed by the four accused with firearms.

The four African males stormed into the truck whilst armed with handguns. They robbed the complainant and his crew of their personal belongings, cash and the truck was hijacked.

The accused then tied them up and were forced into the double cab, which drove randomly and later left them near Kleinfontein junction, 6km from Ventersburg to Kroonstad.

The complainant and his crew managed to untie themselves and hiked till Kroonstad SAPS and reported the incident. Winburg police members were informed and they swiftly followed up on the information which led to the recovery of the truck with cargo, portion of cash and the apprehension of four suspects.

“I would like to commend swift response by Winburg police, who managed to recover the hi-jacked truck within a very short space of time.” said the Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Baile Motswenyane.

The arrested four accused will appear in Ventersburg Magistrate’s court on Tuesday, 09 February2021 for bail application.
