Welkom: Residents of Welkom and neighbouring towns are warned about the bogus prophets that are defrauding the unsuspecting people their money.

The Police would like to advise people not to rely on other people for their successes or to make them rich, because all those promises are only lies.

A case of fraud was registered at Welkom SAPS on the 12 December 2019, after a 51 year old woman was defrauded her money under false pretense that she will win lotto. The victim saw an advert on a local newspaper about a prophet who called himself “Baba Mponya”, who speaks a foreign language and alleged to be a miracle worker.

She phoned the prophet, set appointment and visited the prophet at the consulting room which was dark in Welkom CBD. It is alleged that during the consultation she was promised to win lotto.

She made the first payment of R50 000 in October 2019 and the second payment of R50 000 was made in November 2019. After making these two payments, she phoned to enquire about a promise made by this bogus prophet and she realized that she was defrauded R100 000.

The prophet was no longer available at the office. The incident was reported and a case of fraud was registered.

Residents are strongly warned not to put their trust on people they do not know especially with their hard earned cash.

Any person who might know the whereabouts of a person who calls himself “Baba Mponya”, can contact the investigating officer Warrant Officer Neville Wessels of Welkom Detective Services at following telephone numbers (057) 391 6011, during all hours.
