Welkom: Yesterday; 22 April 2021, Premier Sefora Ntombela led the provincial World TB Day commemoration in Welkom, at Masimong, Harmony Mine. The Premier was accompanied by Free State MEC of Health; Montseng Tsiu.
The Free State Provincial Government has opted to launch an attack against high TB prevalent areas in the province in order to ensure that the province end the scourge of this disease. Matjhabeng in general and Welkom in particular, has a high burden of TB disease in the province.
Matjhabeng Local Municipality boasts a rich mining history and which is also characterised by a high prevalence of TB, it is precisely for this reason; sky rocketing TB infections, that the province resolved to commemorate World TB day.
This high prevalence of TB burden is compounded by Mining Communities and Peri- Mining areas which are now described as TB key Populations. The significance of targeting mining areas is also aimed at reaching out to Mine Workers who are mainly men.
The province is faced with the challenge of men who do not utilize medical facilities even when there is a need. Many of them show up late in health facilities when there is is nothing that can ever be done to reverse the scourge of their sickness or at worst they go and infect their next of kin in rural areas and end up dying silent deaths.
Working together with the South African National Aids Council and Harmony Mines, the province has embarked on a programme that seeks to educate and raise awareness around TB.
